Backblaze B2

About 10 minutes, and creating the bucket and the key costs nothing: this is how you prepare one bucket and one key pair in Backblaze B2 for Guyun. B2 includes a free allowance; usage beyond it is billed as you go.

A B2 key is a Key ID + Application Key pair — the same shape as elsewhere, so fill in the two fields as usual.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Register and open B2

    • Register at backblaze.com: enter your email → open the verification email and follow its link to the Create your account page → set a password (at least 15 characters) and pick a Storage Region, then accept the terms of service. Sign in instead if you already have an account.
    • That Storage Region is where your bucket ends up (CA East / EU Central / US East / US West, default US East) and the bucket form never asks again, so choose it here (for example US West, whose region ID is us-west-004).
    • Your first sign-in also asks for email two-factor verification (a 6-digit code, valid for 20 minutes). Then open B2 Cloud Storage in the left navigation.
    • On a first visit, enable B2 when prompted, and skip that if it is already enabled.
  2. Step 2

    Create the bucket

    • Go to B2 Cloud Storage → Buckets → Create a Bucket and enter a globally unique name of at least 6 characters (100 buckets per account; lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens are the safest choice with the S3-compatible API).
    • There is no region to pick here — it comes from the Storage Region you chose at sign-up. Leave the privacy setting on Private, keep Default Encryption and Object Lock at their defaults, then choose Create a Bucket.
  3. Step 3

    Create an application key

    • Open Application Keys → Add a New Application Key: give Name of Key any name you will recognise, then under Allow Access to Bucket(s) select only the bucket you just created (do not use the master key) and set Type of Access to Read and Write.
    • The result gives you a keyID and an applicationKey; the applicationKey is shown only once, so save it right away.
  4. Step 4

    Note the endpoint

    • The bucket's card shows the Endpoint directly: https://s3.<region>.backblazeb2.com (for example https://s3.us-west-004.backblazeb2.com) — the region is right there in that line (for example us-west-004).
    • Back in Guyun you simply pick that region as the place — the drop-down already has it, so there is nothing to assemble by hand.
  5. Step 5

    Fill it in and test

    • In Guyun open Add storage, choose Backblaze B2 and pick the place, then enter the bucket name, endpoint and the key pair from the table below.
    • Then choose Test connection & save.

How to fill in the Application Key form

The permissions live on the key itself, so three choices are all it takes:

  1. Allow Access to Bucket(s): pick the bucket you just created, not All.
  2. Type of access: choose Read and Write (Guyun needs to read and write).
  3. File name prefix and Duration: leave them empty.

B2 authorises through application keys, so you do not need to write a policy JSON the way you do in AWS.

Do not use the master key

  • The master application key covers the whole account, and the official docs state that the S3-compatible API cannot use it; use an Application Key limited to a single bucket instead.

Region and endpoint must match

  • The endpoint format is https://s3.<region>.backblazeb2.com, and the region in the endpoint must match the bucket's region: us-west-002 and us-west-004 are different regions.
  • If the bucket name contains a period, the app switches to path-style by itself; if it will not connect, check the bucket name against the place first.

Cost

  • B2 includes a free allowance, and usage beyond it is billed as you go (storage, downloads and requests are billed separately) — check the website for the current terms.

Copy these values

They go into the matching fields on Guyun's "Add storage" screen: Place: pick the entry that matches your bucket's region (B2's seven regions, for example us-west-004, eu-central-003, ca-east-006) — the region and the HTTPS endpoint are filled in for you.

How to tell it worked

  • The connection test passes, which means the key can read this bucket.
  • The storage then appears in Guyun's list, and you can open it to see the files in the bucket.
  • If Guyun reports an invalid key or a signature mismatch, count the keyID first — B2 key IDs are exactly 25 characters. Use the console's copy button rather than retyping it.
  • If it fails, see common errors.

Go back to Guyun and choose Test connection & save.
